ToggleNew Islamabad International Airport History
The journey to build the New Islamabad International Airport was a long one, conceived to address the growing air traffic and passenger congestion at the old Benazir Bhutto International Airport. In January 2005, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) announced the initial plan for the airport.
The foundation stone was officially laid on 7 April 2007, by then-President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
The project was designed as Pakistan’s first greenfield airport, meaning it was built from scratch on a new, undeveloped site. This allowed for a modern, purpose-built facility capable of handling a much larger volume of passengers and cargo than its predecessor. The old airport, which also served as a Pakistan Air Force base, was severely constrained by its location and infrastructure, including a lack of modern amenities like jetways.
On 1 May 2018, the New Islamabad International Airport was officially inaugurated. It commenced full commercial operations on 3 May, replacing the old Benazir Bhutto International Airport, which now serves solely as PAF Base Nur Khan.

New Islamabad International Airport Location and Accessibility
The airport’s strategic location is a cornerstone of its success. Situated in the Pind Ranjha area of Attock District, IIA is approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) southwest of Islamabad’s Zero Point and 23 kilometers from Rawalpindi’s Saddar. This placement allows it to serve both twin cities effectively, while also providing a crucial link for the northern regions of the country.
Accessibility to the airport has been greatly enhanced by its direct connection to major road networks. It is easily accessible via the Srinagar Highway and is situated near the M-1 and M-2 motorways, making it convenient for passengers from various parts of the country.
This well-planned infrastructure has significantly reduced travel times and congestion, a stark improvement over the old airport’s location. A dedicated Metro Bus rapid transit service, launched in 2022, also connects the airport to Islamabad and Rawalpindi, further improving public accessibility.
New Islamabad International Airport Impact on Real Estate
The construction and operation of the New Islamabad International Airport have had a profound and transformative impact on the surrounding real estate market. The area, once a relatively undeveloped part of the region, has seen a surge in interest and investment, leading to a boom in residential and commercial projects.
Several mega-housing projects have emerged in the vicinity, capitalizing on the airport’s proximity and improved accessibility. These include well-known names like Capital Smart City, Top City, Eighteen Islamabad, Faisal Town Phase 2, and Blue World City. These developments offer a range of luxury and affordable living options, attracting both domestic and international investors.
Final Verdict
The New Islamabad International Airport represents a crucial upgrade to Pakistan’s aviation sector. While delays and cost overruns marked its construction, the final product is a modern facility that has successfully become a primary gateway for the country. It has surpassed its predecessor in both capacity and amenities, with a modular design that allows for future expansion.
